More About Dina Ferchmin

2024 Candidate for Carmel Clay School Board

Greetings, I'm Dina Ferchmin, and I'm deeply appreciative to call Carmel, Indiana my home. My journey has been shaped by a unique background, offering me a perspective that's both distinctive and profound.

I hail from a family of survivors who endured the harrowing regimes of Nazi and communist Eastern Europe. Born in Argentina during turbulent times, my early years were marked by economic instability, where inflation often restricted our access to basic necessities. Tragically, dissenters against the socialist government vanished, faced torture, or met with untimely ends. Fleeing this turmoil, my family sought refuge in the United States.

Raised with a profound love for this country, instilled in me by my parents, I absorbed my father's mantra: "This is the greatest country on earth. Anyone who works hard here can succeed." Yet, I soon realized that while grit is indispensable, education is the true gateway to success.

Inspired by a sense of gratitude for the freedoms afforded to us, I chose to serve in the military. Graduating from the United States Military Academy, I served as a paratrooper in the esteemed 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, achieving the rank of captain.

Fort Bragg is where I crossed paths with my Hoosier husband, who was also serving in the Army. Following my military tenure, I joined General Electric as a Six Sigma Black Belt, leveraging data analysis as a catalyst for improvement—a philosophy encapsulated in my motto: "Show me the data."

In 2014, our family relocated to Carmel, drawn by its vibrant community, outstanding schools, and proximity to our church. Throughout our sons' schooling, I actively participated in their extracurricular activities, serving as a proud team mom for the Carmel Middle wrestling team, and cheering them on at football, rugby, and cross-country events. Today, Peter (23) and Michael (21) attend Purdue University, while Matthew (19) is presently engaged in full-time work, with plans to join Purdue Fort Wayne in the fall.

In our leisure time, Matt, my husband of 30 years, and I cherish moments at our quaint cabin in Monroe County, indulging in pursuits like hunting, foraging, and hiking, which bring us closer to nature and each other.
